Context — Testing Green Hydrogen in Industrial Steel Production

Uddeholm AB is a leading Swedish producer of high-performance tool steel for global industrial applications. As part of its long-term sustainability roadmap, Uddeholm explored the blending of renewable hydrogen and biogas to replace fossil fuels in certain stages of its production processes.

To support this initiative, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ supplied more than 10 tonnes of renewable hydrogen to Uddeholm’s facilities in Hagfors. The deliveries enabled operational testing of hydrogen as a potential low-carbon fuel within steel manufacturing.


Why It’s a Key Project

This project represents 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµâ€™s first industrial hydrogen supply in Sweden and successfully demonstrates the seamless blending of hydrogen with biogas. With this technology, it’s now possible to switch freely from 0% to nearly 100% hydrogen. This innovation opens up entirely new possibilities, enabling production to adapt dynamically to spot market prices without requiring intermediate storage.

This is the first system of its kind to function with pulsating burner control.

The pilot provides:

  • A real operational proof of concept for hydrogen in steel manufacturing
  • Insights into dynamic blending of fossil-free fuels such as hydrogen in high-temperature processes
  • A potential replicable model for industrial decarbonisation in the Nordics

It shows the feasibility of using renewable hydrogen in existing steel facilities without major disruption to production.

Decarbonising Construction Sites Today

Karp Kneip, a European family-owned group specialising in civil engineering and road construction, places the decarbonisation of its activities at the heart of its strategy. Aware of the environmental impact of the construction industry, the group chose to begin by reducing COâ‚‚ emissions directly on its construction sites.

For its motorway construction site near Carcassonne, Karp-Kneip’s partner Trabet has replaced its diesel generators with units running on green hydrogen, supplied by 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ. These generators power the workers’ site facilities and the repair workshop, ensuring energy and comfort while reducing the project’s carbon footprint.

Result: 2 tonnes of COâ‚‚ avoided in just 6 months. Concrete proof that it is possible to combine operational performance with a positive impact today.

Context – Scaling Up Green Hydrogen for Mobility

is Europe’s largest operator of public hydrogen refuelling stations — a key enabler of Germany’s transition to clean transport.

In 2024, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ signed its first long-term offtake agreement in Germany, marking a new step in our European expansion. Over the next five years, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ will supply more than 1,200 tonnes of renewable hydrogen produced at its Schwäbisch Gmünd site — the largest green hydrogen production plant in the federal state of µþ²¹»å±ð²Ô-°Âü°ù³Ù³Ù±ð³¾²ú±ð°ù²µ.

Deliveries will begin in 2025, serving four H2 MOBILITY stations in the states of µþ²¹»å±ð²Ô-°Âü°ù³Ù³Ù±ð³¾²ú±ð°ù²µ and Rhineland-Palatinate, starting with the sites of Ludwigshafen and Frankenthal.

This partnership connects two pioneers — combining 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµâ€™s production expertise with H2 MOBILITY’s infrastructure leadership to make renewable hydrogen accessible for all forms of transport.

Deutsche Bahn Energie has launched an innovative project in Tübingen: to run hydrogen trains on renewable hydrogen, produced by a 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµbox and stored in a station before powering the trains.

The context

91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ supports Deutsche Bahn in reaching its objective of carbon neutrality by 2040 by delivering renewable hydrogen as part of the .

Germany’s largest railway operator is working on several projects to achieve this goal, including the H2goesrail research project. This project tests the transition from a regional diesel train to hydrogen. DB AG, DB Regio, and DB Energie are testing not only the operation of these new hydrogen trains (supplied by Siemens Mobility) but also the complete system that will make it possible to operate the train: from the charging station to maintenance.

Testing will begin in 2024 in southern Germany between Tübingen, Horb, and Pforzheim.

Switching from diesel to hydrogen trains

91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ produces renewable hydrogen in Tübingen thanks to its 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ Box, supplied with renewable electricity by DB Energie. 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ proposed to start these tests with the 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ Box: hydrogen production in a container. The 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ Box makes it possible to start using hydrogen faster: no supply, simplified connection, etc.

In Tübingen, 190kg of hydrogen per day will be produced to supply the hydrogen train.

The setup in Tübingen enables DB Energie to cover and test a complete and sustainable supply chain. From the use of renewable energies to generate green hydrogen over high-pressure storage to the final usage as fuel including the fast refueling process through our innovative train filling station. 

With our work, we are developing solutions to the question of how our society can deal with the increasing demand for renewable energy in the energy and transport sectors. Different storage technologies are required for greater interconnection. 

In this way, we can use the surplus energy in the form of hydrogen, to contribute to CO2-free rail transport.

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), the organizer since 1923 of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, has launched the challenge to create a Hydrogen category for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2025. This contributes to the goal of a zero-emission competition and low-carbon mobility.

The background

To demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as an energy carrier, the Le Mans site has equipped itself with a hydrogen station. It was inaugurated in July 2020. It supports various local uses of hydrogen mobility. This hydrogen station already supplies a Le Mans Métropole bus as well as individual vehicles and household refuse dumpsters. Other buses ordered by Le Mans Métropole will gradually also come here to fuel up. The support of the various local representatives has contributed greatly to this opening. Indeed, the town hall of Le Mans, the department of La Sarthe, the Pays de la Loire region, and the CCI have also been driving forces because convinced of the potential of hydrogen.

At the same time, the organizer is continuing its selection of partners to equip the hydrogen prototypes that will engage in the famous endurance race. Among these partners, for tanks, for powertrain (battery, engine, power electronics), Symbio, Michelin, Dietsmann, Richard Mille and Essilor. These partners share these beliefs about hydrogen mobility.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ x ACO, the partnership for the 24 Hours of Le Mans

In order to achieve this eco-responsible approach, it was essential that the hydrogen delivered be a clean hydrogen, that is to say produced in a renewable way. It is then that the innovative approach is part of a project of a completely different scale: the creation of a renewable hydrogen sector, regional, bringing together several actors involved in this transition.

This hydrogen ecosystem project, known as H2 Ouest, aims to help develop a completely renewable hydrogen fuel chain in the West of France and brings together, among others, ACO, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ and the Vendée energy network operator Sydev. The project won the support of the French energy and environment agency ADEME as part of the H2 – Mobility / Hydrogen Mobility Ecosystems call for projects of 2019.

Under this project, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ and ACO worked together to build a hydrogen ecosystem in Pays de la Loire based on a local and renewable hydrogen production model. 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ also worked with ACO to ensure the compliance of the existing fuel station to receive renewable hydrogen. The first containers of 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ hydrogen were delivered from the Bouin production site in Vendée.

Car racing and the 24 Hours of Le Mans have always strived to develop new technologies. Today, more than ever, the role of ACO, is to ensure access to all to mobility that respects our environment and that of our children tomorrow. The background

Our customer is growing in France and Europe. This company is facing growing logistical and environmental challenges. It is particularly committed to a responsible approach to ensure the sustainability of its activities. One of the levers under study to innovate on both logistics and the environment? Renewable hydrogen!

The logistics platform of Carquefou (France, 44) has chosen to use hydrogen for its handling equipment, motivated by a very simple advantage: the charging time. It is only 2 to 3 minutes for a hydrogen engine, whereas it took several hours to recharge an electric battery, and therefore a dedicated charging area on the platform was needed.

The resulting benefits are numerous: saving space at the depot, because these trolleys are not stored during the many hours of loading, less immobilization of the trolleys that can almost operate continuously, and, ultimately, an optimized fleet size. But above all, by choosing renewable hydrogen, Lidl manages to completely decarbonize this activity!

The logistics platform project

Since the end of 2021, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ has been delivering 75 kg of renewable and environmentally friendly hydrogen per day to the Lidl of Carquefou (Loire Atlantique) logistics platform. The material handling equipment is refueled thanks to 3 pumps installed inside the warehouse. The hydrogen compressor and storage station are positioned in a specific area outside the platform.
To help Lidl with this project, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ has worked with . It is a valuable partner, with whom 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ has been able to build the strategy to be implemented, propose the right sizing of the fleet, the number of stations to be planned, and define the level of hydrogen consumption.
Since January 2022, 98 handling machines (80% of the logistics fleet) have been running on renewable hydrogen.

And this is just the beginning…

A pioneer in this field, Lidl is already studying the possibility of developing green hydrogen as a solution to optimize its logistics. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the medium term, Lidl plans to deploy green hydrogen vehicles on other logistics platforms. Or use it to fuel part of its fleet of delivery trucks.

Lidl is proud to open in Carquefou the first green hydrogen logistics platform in Europe thanks to its partners Plug Power, which adapted the handling machines, and 91ÂãÁÄÊÓÆµ, whose green hydrogen production plant is located 75km from our site. With 98 operational handling machines and a delivery truck to come in 2022, Lidl believes in the future of green hydrogen to optimize its logistics and reduce its CO2 emissions in line with its commitments.
